An employee on a BC Ferries vessel has tested positive for COVID-19.

B.C. Ferries says the employee was working on the Spirit of British Columbia on March 9th and 10th and was showing no symptoms.

The employee starting experiencing symptoms on their days off and was then tested.

They say the employee’s exact position cannot be released for privacy reasons, but they say it is one where they do not come in contact with customers.

Seven other crew members were in contact with the employee and are on paid leave and monitoring their symptoms.

B.C. Ferries says they immediately contacted Emergency Managment B.C., and were advised by health officials that the risk of exposure to customers was low.

Officials advised B.C. Ferries that passengers do not need to go get tested.

The Spirit of British Columbia operates on the Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen route.

More to come.
