B.C. reports 176 new COVID-19 cases in Island Health, 2 deaths

British Columbia health officials in a statement to the media Wednesday reported 1,474 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths since their last update on Dec. 21.

Of the new cases, 176 are in the Island Health region while two of six reported deaths over the past 24 hours were also in the Island Health region.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 231,117 while the death toll climbs to 2,409.

Health officials note that the “numbers of total and new cases are provisional due to a delayed data refresh and will be verified once confirmed,” according to the release.

There are currently 7,253 active cases in the province, 187 people in hospital — 71 of whom are in intensive care. There are 1,146 active cases in the Island Health region.

Meanwhile, new data from health officials shows that fully vaccinated people accounted for 71.7 per cent of all new COVID-19 cases reported in B.C. between Dec. 14 and Dec. 20.

A total of  221,280 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 9,219,326 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

There was no data regarding the number of Omicron cases provided in today’s update.
