Island's active COVID case count hits new high as B.C. reports 123 new infections for the region

British Columbia health officials in a statement released to the media Tuesday reported 519 new COVID-19 cases, including 123 linked to the Island Health region, since their last update on Dec. 13.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 223,661 while the death toll remains at 2,386.

There are currently 3,171 active cases in the province, 191 people in hospital — 81 of whom are in intensive care.

B.C. health officials say there are 804 active cases within the Island Health region, while the Island Health authority dashboard shows a record-setting 717 active cases — 219 in North Island, 203 in Central Island, 295 in South Island — for the region.

Meanwhile, a total of 218,001 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 9,001,045 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.
