Shawnigan Lake RCMP are investigating after a child was struck and killed in a driveway in Cobble Hill.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the child killed after being hit by a vehicle in a driveway in Cobble Hill Tuesday was a male.

The service is investigating the child’s death and is not releasing his name or age.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP says around 11:45 a.m. they responded to call of a child struck in the driveway of a home on Maynard Avenue.

BC Ambulance and fire crews had already responded by the time police arrived.

Police said the child succumbed to injuries despite lifesaving efforts by emergency crews.

Family members of the boy were at the scene and are being assisted by victim services.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is co-operating with the investigation.

Police said evidence gathered does not indicate impairment was a factor in the collision.

The collision is still under investigation and Shawnigan Lake RCMP is being assisted by the Vancouver Island Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services team.

“This is a tragic and traumatic incident, and we are working closely with all members and first responders who attended the scene to ensure they have the support they need,” Shawnigan Lake RCMP Detachment Commander Sgt. Tim Desaulniers said in a statement.
