B.C. has released its latest COVID-19 data for the span of the last week and over that time, seven people within Island Health died as a result of the virus.

The latest release of COVID-19 statistics shows there are 364 people with the virus in hospital as of today — an increase of 40 from the last update a week ago.

Data from the BC Centre for Disease Control shows the number of patients in intensive care has dropped by two to 36.

The number of hospitalizations is up more than 40 per cent from the low of 254 recorded on March 22.

The report shows there were 23 new fatalities in the week of April 3 to 9, with seven of those being linked to Island Health. That brings the death total to 12 on Vancouver Island since March 26.

New cases over the same span of time totalled 1,770 with 322 of those connected to Island Health.

The centre’s statistics say 91 per cent of those 18 years and older have received two doses of a vaccine.

Those in the five-to-11 age category who have had two shots of vaccine are now 40 per cent.

Omicron remains the most common variant infection among B.C. residents.
