B.C. reports 649 new COVID-19 cases, 89 in Island Health

British Columbia health officials are reporting 649 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Friday, with 89 linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 545 active COVID-19 cases.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 365 are in hospital with 143 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 5,106 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Thursday’s numbers, there have been 61 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 281 in the Fraser Health region, 89 in the Island Health region, 88 in the Interior Health region, 130 in the Northern Health region and no new cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

There were 13 additional deaths related to the virus on Friday. This brings the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 2,109.

Of the total deaths in the last 24 hours, two were located in Island Health.

Also as of Friday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 200,898.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 8,120,458 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 89.9 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 89.4 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 84.6 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,659,100 residents.

From Oct. 14-20, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 65.2% of cases and from Oct. 7-20, they accounted for 77.0 per cent of hospitalizations.

There is currently an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at the Tofino General Hospital as well.
