B.C. reports 64 new COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island with 2 deaths

British Columbia health officials are reporting 749 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Thursday, with 64 linked to the Island Health region.

Additionally, nine people died from the virus across the province with two of them being located within the Island Health region.

In a statement released to the media, the government says that there are 145 people in critical care as a result of the virus.

Due to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, however, officials are unable to give accurate numbers of hospitalizations or active cases. In a written statement, it outlines that these numbers will be available in Friday’s bulletin.

The government did however outline that from Sept. 15-28, unvaccinated people accounted for 80.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

Since Wednesday’s numbers, there have been 113 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 267 in the Fraser Health region, 64 in the Island Health region, 157 in the Interior Health region, 148 in the Northern Health region and no cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

As far as deaths go, the two deaths on Vancouver Island and the seven others across the province bring the total over the course of the pandemic to 1,962.

Also as of Thursday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 186,994.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 7,390,103 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 88.5 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 83.7 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 81.0 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,539,236 residents.

The government adds that due to a delayed data refresh, the numbers of total and new cases are provisional and will be verified when confirmed.
