B.C. reports 549 new COVID-19 cases, 73 in Island Health

British Columbia health officials are reporting 549 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Friday, with 73 linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 605 active COVID-19 cases.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 441 are in hospital with 129 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 4,483 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Thursday’s numbers, there have been 78 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 184 in the Fraser Health region, 73 in the Island Health region, 110 in the Interior Health region, 102 in the Northern Health region and no new cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

There was one additional death related to the virus on Friday — in the Northern Health region — bringing the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 2,201.

Also as of Friday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 208,265.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 8,311,858 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 90.6 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 90.2 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 86.3 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,733,309 residents.

From Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 65.3% of cases and from Oct. 21 to Nov. 3, they accounted for 71.1% of hospitalizations.

There are currently two ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks within the Island Health region, one at Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo and the other at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
