British Columbia health officials are reporting another 1,785 new cases of COVID-19, including 283 new cases in Island Health.

It brings the provincial total of COVID-19 cases to 243,731.

Of the new cases, 791 were reported in Fraser Health, 400 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 269 in Interior Health, 283 in Island Health and 42 in Northern Health.

The Ministry of Health did not provide updated numbers of vaccinations, hospitalizations and deaths, saying it would return to regular reporting on Wednesday.

B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix will provide an update at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

It comes a day after the province reported 6,288 COVID-19 cases over the Christmas long weekend, including a record-high 2,552 cases from Dec. 24-25.

Health experts have said COVID-19 case numbers are likely to be higher than reported because several hospitals and sites have reached testing limits.

Henry had said testing sites across B.C. were seeing long lines and waits, and urged people not to get tested unless they needed to.
