B.C. says Island Health has highest number of Omicron cases in daily report

British Columbia health officials are reporting 753 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Thursday, with 137 linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 905 active COVID-19 cases.

A deeper look into the numbers shows that the Province is saying that Island Health is the authority with the most Omicron variant cases reported at this time.

In total, there have been 135 Omicron cases reported and 71 of those are within the Island Health region. The next highest total belongs to Fraser Health with 38. Among the other authorities, Vancouver Coastal has reported 20, Interior Health has five and Northern Health has one.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 184 are in hospital with 70 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 3,878 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Wednesday’s numbers, there have been 232 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 240 in the Fraser Health region, 137 in the Island Health region, 99 in the Interior Health region, 45 in the Northern Health region and no new cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

There was three additional death related to the virus in the past 24 hours, with one of those being in the Island Health region. That brings the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 2,396.

Also as of Thursday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 224,998.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 9,067,590 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 92.0 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 91.6 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 89.2 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,857,097 residents and 15 per cent of the population has received a third dose (660,033 people).

From Dec. 8-14, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 46.3 per cent of cases and from Dec. 1-14, they accounted for 70.2 per cent of hospitalizations.
