The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating into an arrest by the Victoria Police Department that took place in Esquimalt earlier this month.

According to British Columbia’s police watchdog, an investigation has been launched for an incident that took place on August 9 at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Based on information that has been acquired by IIO, VicPD officers responded to a request for assistance at a residence in the 800-block of Kindersley Road.

When Victoria Police arrived on the scene, they were told that a man who was on the property was refusing to leave despite being asked to do so.

Police told the IIO that they spoke to the man and asked him to leave as well, however, he continued to refuse.

Victoria Police then proceeded to advise the man he was under arrest and that is when a struggle ensued, according to the IIO.

During the arrest, the IIO said the man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The IIO requests that any person who heard the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

An investigation is currently ongoing into the Esquimalt arrest.
