Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Selina Robinson announces plans for three properties at the old Harewood School site.

The B.C. government, the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools have signed an agreement to develop the former site of the Harewood School.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Selina Robinson made the announcement on Monday in Nanaimo. She said the three adjacent parcels of publicly-owned land at 502 and 505 Howard Ave. and 564 Fifth St. will be developed for housing, recreation and educational facilities. The agreement states the three groups will identify opportunities for the facilities.

“Our government is committed to bringing together partners where there’s an opportunity to use available land to meet a community’s needs, including building more affordable housing for families,” Robinson said.

“Whether it’s through our new Housing Hub, our partnerships with non-profits in the three Community Housing Fund projects here in Nanaimo, or agreements like this, we are committed to working together to make life better for people in communities around B.C.”

The priorities for the properties include new affordable rental housing, a new location for the learning alternative school program, integration of parks and recreation services, incorporation of other community services, such as health services and childcare.

Initial planning and public consultation are set to be finished by summer 2020. The cost of any future plans has not been released at this time.
