Arrest made after Edward Milne Community School placed under hold and secure

Police say a report of a possible serious incident at Edward Milne Community School led to a hold and secure procedure and an arrest Thursday.

The high school was put on hold and secure at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning. It lifted just after 2 p.m.  In a hold-and-secure, outside doors are locked and activity inside carries on as usual in the school.

Police say on Nov. 7, they received a complaint about a man possibly planning a serious incident at Edward Milne Community School. Based on the information given, Sooke RCMP and the Sooke School District started the hold and secure procedure at the school.

Sooke RCMP, with assistance from Victoria police and West Shore RCMP, located the suspect. Police say the suspect was arrested and is still in custody.

“This incident was resolved quickly and safely due to the quick actions of the faculty at Edward Milne Community School, the school district and our partners at Victoria Police and the West Shore RCMP Detachment’ Sooke RCMP detachment commander Staff Sergeant Brett Sinden said in a statement.

Scott Stinson, superintendent of School District 62 said the hold and secure was out of an abundance of caution. He also said classes will continue on as normal for the remainder of the day.
