Another Vancouver Island school was added to Island Health’s COVID-19 exposure list on Monday morning as daily cases in British Columbia remain high.

Parents, students and staff of Penelakut Island Elementary near Chemainus are being cautioned about possible exposures to the coronavirus in the previous week.

Penelakut Island Elementary — located at 1751 School Rd. on Penelakut Island — experienced a COVID-19 exposure on April 14 and 15, according to Island Health.

The facility joins 13 other facilities that are currently on Island Health’s Exposures in Schools list.

In the last handful of days, David Cameron Elementary in Victoria, Pleasant Valley Elementary in Nanaimo, École Victor-Brodeur in Victoria and Maple Bay Elementary School in Duncan were all added to the list as well.

With a growing concern surrounding case numbers and COVID-19 variants in British Columbia, some parents have opted to pull their children out of school due to the increased risks.

An exposure is defined by Island Health as a single person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period.
