The Brown Cup rowing showdown between the University of Victoria Vikes and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds returns to Victoria this Saturday.

The two schools will go head-to-head in the Gorge Waterway and end up in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Established in 1992, it’s a dual-style race, with both teams starting side by side and racing to be the first ones across the finishing line.

Four races will take place on April 1, with reserve racers kicking off the event:

  • 11 a.m. – Men’s Reserve race
  • 11:20 a.m. – Women’s Reserve race
  • 12 p.m. – Men’s Varsity race
  • 12:20 p.m. – Women’s Varsity race

CHEK will be livestreaming the races on CHEK+, Facebook and YouTube.

There will be several vantage points to watch the race in person. Spectators can swing by one of the many restaurants sponsoring the event for a close-up view of when both teams pass underneath the Selkirk trestle bridge or watch as they battle it out in the final 750-metre stretch from the Johnston Street bridge to the finish line.

Last year, the uVic’s women’s teams clinched both victories, bringing home both the Brown Cup and Campbell-Dowd Cup.

If you missed last year’s race, the entire event can be rewatched on CHEK’s YouTube channel.
