A 42-year-old Duncan man is facing impaired driving charges after a high-speed crash on Sooke Road Thursday, police said.

According to Sooke RCMP, 911 dispatchers were overwhelmed with calls starting at around 1:20 p.m. The callers said a 2015 red Jeep Wrangler was racing along Highway 14 in Langford. Police said the vehicle reached 180 kilometres an hour and was passing cars on a double solid line.

The driver lost control in the 5800-block of Sooke Road and veered off the road, plowing into a bus stop and a utility pole. A fence was also knocked down, as were several trees. The Jeep ended up in a ravine.

Police found alcohol and a loaded handgun inside the Jeep. The 42-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was treated in hospital before he was taken into custody. He is facing charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and possession of a unregistered restricted weapon.

The man’s name has not been released at this time.

Sooke RCMP are asking any other witnesses who saw the Jeep on Highway 14 on Thursday to call 250-642-5241.
