The Ahousaht First Nation is urging Tofino Council to limit the number of liquor bottles that can be bought at private beer and wine stores to help combat bootlegging on Flores Island, where the nation is based.

Hereditary Chief Richard George says about 300 to 500 bottles of vodka go weekly to Ahousaht, where they’re sold for 60-dollars on average, and up to 200 dollars at times.

He says council could enact a bylaw limiting private beer and wine stores to sell two bottles of 26 ounces each per customer.

Tofino council has referred the request to city staff for a legal and policy review.
