On the West Coast, we do things differently. At CHEK Media – which has been rooted here on Vancouver Island since 1956 – we have been carving our own path as the only local, independent employee-owned TV station in North America. In fact, we’re more than a TV station. We are multi-media content creators, with a wide reach across multiple platforms. We have the number one newscast and news website on Vancouver Island, and we create a wide range of diverse, local programs for West Coast audiences, the type we’d like to see ourselves.

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced investigative journalist with a passion for uncovering and reporting on critical issues affecting Vancouver Islanders. With the rise of misinformation and disinformation, you will be tasked with producing and reporting as part of a new segment called “FactCHEK” which aims to give our audience a deeper, more in-depth and accurate analysis of critical issues and stories. The segment, which will be available on all our platforms, will feature investigative stories but will also complement our nightly news coverage with additional analysis into complex issues. You will be extremely motivated to uncover stories and craft compelling content for Vancouver Island’s most-watched newscasts. This position is 40 hours a week.

Responsibilities

  • Pitching original and creative story ideas
  • Creating high-quality investigative reports for various platforms including television broadcasts, CHEKNews.ca, and social media
  • Identifying unique angles, perspectives, and data that could complement other news stories
  • Ability to generate story ideas and make effective editorial decisions to complete scripting, editing and production of the story in preparation for publishing or airing
  • Verifying accurate information under tight deadlines
  • Developing and maintaining a network of reliable sources
  • Following up on tips
  • Filing Freedom of Information requests
  • Collaborating with the entire news team
  • This position reports to the News Director

You bring to the role

  • A history of breaking original news stories either online or for television news
  • An interest in a wide range of issues including the environment, politics, crime, the economy, healthcare, Indigenous affairs, social issues, consumer protection, and economics
  • A self-starter, who is able to initiate short- and long-range stories
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently to ensure the planning, follow through and delivery of complex stories
  • Experience in data-driven journalism and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use video and graphics to enhance stories and convey complex information effectively
  • Strong understanding of the legal system
  • Creativity, a passion for journalism, and a positive attitude
  • Effective time management to meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written skills with a strong storytelling ability that meets journalistic standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a great team player that supports a positive team culture

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of journalism experience
  • University degree, diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience in journalism
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record

What we offer

  • Work location is primarily onsite at the CHEK Media Centre in Victoria. Free onsite parking
  • Schedule will primarily be Monday-Friday, may include some weekends and holidays as needed
  • This is a unionized position. Group 2 or 3. Salary to commensurate with experience
  • 2-year contract to start, which may lead into a permanent role
  • All Full-time employees of CHEK are expected to participate in the employee share ownership program after one year of employment
