Nanaimo fire crews respond to fire in homeless encampment under Pearson Bridge

A homeless encampment caught on fire under a bridge in Nanaimo
Nanaimo fire crews rushed to the Pearson Bridge when a homeless encampment under the structure went up in flames on Wednesday afternoon.
The call came in shortly after 1:30 p.m., when firefighters arrived they saw discovered heavy black smoke coming from under the bridge, which crosses the Millstone River along Highway 19.
Fire crews knocked the flames out quickly and traffic wasn’t impacted, as fire crews accessed the fire through the old Tally-Ho parking lot.
According to fire crews, no one was in the encampment when the fire happened and no one was injured, but all of the contents in the area were destroyed.
Investigators are looking into what started the blaze.
