West Shore RCMP say they are looking to speak to two men after a suspicious brush fire on the Galloping Goose trail behind the Victoria General Hospital Wednesday evening.
West Shore RCMP were called to the fire, which was south of the Helmcken Road overpass in View Royal, at around 6:30 p.m.
The View Royal Fire Department put out the fire but police said investigators are concerned because the fire was growing rapidly and could have affected residents in the area.
The fire is considered suspicious. West Shore RCMP and the View Royal Fire Department are investigating the cause of the blaze.
Police say they are looking for two men who were reportedly trying to put out the fire before police arrived.
“We have received information that there were two males in their early 20s on BMX bicycles who appeared to be trying to put out the fire. These males left the scene prior to police arrival. We are asking these males to come forward and speak to police as they may have information regarding the fire investigation,” Const. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer with West Shore RCMP, said in a statement.
The two men are described by police as white men in their early 20s. One man was reportedly wearing a blue shirt at the time. One of the men was also seen with a neon yellow bag strapped to their back. They were last spotted riding their BMX bikes westbound on the Galloping Goose trail away from the fire.
The fire danger rating in the area is high and police said the brush fire “could have had a disastrous outcome.” Anyone who has information on the fire or the two men are asked to call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264. You can also report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
