Campbell River fire crews responded to two house fires in Willow Point in the last week, with one of them considered suspicious.
RCMP are investigating after firefighters went to a home in the 2700-block of Eden Street last Saturday night just after 10 p.m.
Two occupants of the home were inside and were unaware that an outside wall was burning at the front of the house.
Officials say a third resident came home and spotted the flames and alerted the two inside.
They were able to knock the flames down with buckets of water before crews arrived.
Investigators say the spread of the fire was limited because of the non-combustible cement board siding.
Tuesday morning just after 5 a.m., crews responded to a house fire in the 500-block of Bartlett Road where a smoke alarm woke the residents.
A small appliance was discovered to be on fire and smoke was filling the home.
Officials say paramedics treated one person for minor burns after removing the appliance from the kitchen.
Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty says Tuesday’s fire was a real-life example of the importance of having a working smoke alarm.
“With the timing of these fires right after Fire Prevention Week, the City of Campbell River firefighters urge all community members to be vigilant about preventing fires,” said Doherty in a release.
“This is a 365-day-a-year effort. Please take action to ensure you have working smoke alarms installed in accordance to the BC Building Code and manufacturer recommendations – and test those smoke alarms regularly.”
