Vancouver Island now has seven new electric vehicle charging stations that B.C. Hydro says will connect drivers from Victoria to Campbell River.

B.C. Hydro announced it has completed the second phase of its fast-charging network with 28 new stations across the province.

It is in addition to the 30 completed in 2016.

The new charging stations on Vancouver Island are located at:

  • Campbell River community centre
  • Courtenay Superstore
  • Nanaimo Superstore
  • Pacific Rim Visitor Centre
  • Port Alberni No Frills
  • Qualicum Quality Foods
  • Sidney City Hall

The fast-charging stations can fuel an electric vehicle’s battery to 80 per cent in 30 minutes or less.

B.C. Hydro says the charging stations will help ease ‘range anxiety’ for electric vehicle owners on long trips.

B.C. Hydro says charging sessions have increased 53 per cent over last year on Vancouver Island and there are 9,000 electric vehicles on the road in the province.

That number is expected to reach 300,000 by 2030.

The next phase of installing fast-charging stations plans to connect drivers from the Interior north to Prince George and eventually to Prince Rupert.
