Some beachgoers on the Sunshine Coast got a thrill during a close encounter with a pod of whales over the weekend.
Bruce Robinson posted this video on youtube of a pod of orcas rubbing along a pebbly beach near West Sechelt Saturday.
The whales were as close as an estimated 15 feet away while the video was being taken.
Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard of the Vancouver Aquarium says the behaviour is common but unique to northern resident killer whales.
The whales’ cultural tradition is called beach rubbing.
