Protesters demanding an end to old-growth logging in British Columbia were arrested Monday morning after blocking traffic on Douglas Street.
Victoria Police say they arrested three supporters of Save Old Growth for mischief for blocking the road after they blocked traffic on Douglas Street across from Mayfair Mall. The road is no longer blocked, say police.
Supporters of Save Old Growth said Monday that they would block sections of the Trans-Canada Highway in Vancouver, Victoria, and Nanaimo.
The group, which carried out similar protests in January, is calling on the provincial government to pass legislation that would immediately end all old-growth logging in British Columbia.
“On our current path, we are looking at the destruction of our society, the economy and the loss of many many more lives, right here in B.C., in the next 10 to 20 years. The government has known this for decades and done nothing to safeguard our future,” the press release reads.
Save Old Growth, which includes members of Extinction Rebellion, describes itself as a “new direct action group” that demands the B.C. government put an end to old-growth logging. They are responsible for various traffic disruptions and blockades across the province in January, which resulted in 54 arrests.
