A 62-year-old man was arrested and issued four violation tickets after he was caught vandalizing stop signs in Oak Bay last week, according to police.

Oak Bay Police say officers responded to a report of mischief in progress on Tuesday, Feb. 20, after a witness saw a man using a black marker to graffiti numerous stop signs in the area of Beach Drive and Windsor Road.

Officers then found and arrested the man.

“Police noted the man was attaching stickers to the stop sign and writing in black marker, both of which were political protests,” said Oak Bay Police in a news release.

They say the man was released from custody and issued four violation tickets, totalling $109 per stop sign, for defacing traffic control devices.

Crews from Oak Bay Public Works were later called in to remove the marker and stickers from the signs.
