A 52-year-old woman has died following a single-vehicle collision near Sayward Thursday night.

Police say a 52-year-old woman is dead after her pickup truck went over an embankment into the Salmon River Thursday night.

At 8:50 p.m., Sayward RCMP were called to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 19, 1.5 kilometres from the Sayward Junction and south of the Salmon River bridge.

Police said the woman’s truck went off an embankment into the water. A bystander who witnessed the accident called emergency services from a gas station as there was no cell service. Witnesses managed to break a window and get the female driver out from the partially-submerged vehicle, but they were unable to revive her.

The woman, who is from the Sayward area, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released at this time.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
