4.9 magnitude earthquake recorded west of Port Alice

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded west of Port Alice Friday evening.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the earthquake had a depth of eight kilometres. It was recorded at 7:14 p.m. PDT (2:14 UTC). 

The earthquake was located 129 kilometres west of Port Alice on Vancouver Island and 290 kilometres west of Campbell River.

Officials say there were no reports of any damage and none would be expected. The earthquake was not felt and no tsunami is expected, Earthquakes Canada said.

The last earthquake recorded in the region was on May 9, also offshore and west of Port Alice. The 4.5 magnitude earthquake was not felt and there was no damage reported.
