Central Saanich Fire Hall 1 has welcomed 360-new solar panels in efforts to be more sustainable.

The solar power project is the largest on Vancouver Island and will generate up to 80 per cent of the current energy consumption for the station.

The 136-kilowatt system will produce so much energy throughout the summer months power not only the station but the surrounding homes and businesses.

Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor says the feedback from everyone has been incredible.

“The solar system that you see here, we hope, to expand to other buildings as the opportunity arises,” said Windsor

The investment cost of the new panels will be recovered in 11-years with one million dollars of savings expected over the next 30-40 year life span of the panels.
