Mounties in Nanaimo say two people have died following a serious crash near Nanaimo Lakes, west of the Harbour City.

Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred around 9 a.m. Saturday morning along Nanaimo River Road, near the Nanaimo Lakes Deadwood campground.

Members of the Nanaimo RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and Nanaimo Fire Rescue were called to the scene.

The BC Coroner Service declared the two people dead at the scene, and have taken lead on the investigation, police say.

No foul play is suspected at this time, but a full investigation by the RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is still underway.

Traffic in the area was disrupted Saturday evening as officials continued to probe the scene.

“Nanaimo River Road will be closed in both directions near Deadwood Campground and there is no available alternate route around the police investigative scene at this time,” said the Nanaimo RCMP in a release around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
