Nanaimo RCMP say a pedestrian who was struck on Hammond Bay Road on March 6, 2019, has died of from his injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP say the 17-year-old boy who was hit at a marked crosswalk a week ago has died from his injuries.

The teenage boy was struck by a driver in a Toyota RAV4 at 3:15 p.m. on March 6 while he was attempting to walk through a crosswalk at Hammond Bay and Ventura roads, Nanaimo RCMP said. The boy was taken to the local hospital then airlifted to a hospital in Victoria.

According to RCMP, the boy had no brain activity and family members came by to pay their respects. His organs were donated and a funeral was held over the weekend.

The boy was a student at Dover Bay Secondary and a letter from the principal was sent out to parents and guardians saying the boy had passed away.

Counsellors were at the school to speak to students and staff who wanted additional support.

Police said the 33-year-old driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and co-operated with police. Witnesses told police the boy had stepped onto the crosswalk and was going south across Hammond Bay Road when he was struck.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. The boy’s name was not made public by police or family.
