Saanich police are seeking surveillance footage after 16 vehicles were vandalized and damaged, with the cost of repairs likely amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.

The incidents happened between Dec. 29, 2023, and Jan. 5, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., in the areas of Harriet Road, Burnside Road West, Dupplin Road, Culduthel Avenue and Whittier Avenue, according to police in a news release Tuesday.

“The damage caused to these vehicles is estimated to be in the tens of thousands, and investigators have determined multiple criminal offences, including mischief over and under $5,000, occurred,” said Saanich Police.

Investigators don’t believe that the vehicles or their owners were specifically targeted.

Photos provided by police show a white Audi SUV with a missing gas cap, broken side-view mirror and slashed tires.

Sgt. Damian Kowalewich, a spokesperson for Saanich Police, says officers realize the impact this has on local residents, including the costs and stress involved.

“We have officers actively investigating these cases and are receiving assistance from the Forensic Identification Section,” said Kowalewich, adding that they’re looking for a suspect described as a caucasian man in his 30s with a thin build.

Investigators are asking local residents to review surveillance footage, including CCTV video, and contact them.

People with information that could assist with the investigation can call Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
