The Oceanside RCMP are investigating after a head-on collision claimed the life of a 69-year-old Parksville man on Friday afternoon.

Mounties say they were called to the intersection of Dunbar Way and the Alberni Highway around 4 p.m. for a report of a two-vehicle collision.

Based on initial findings, police believe that an SUV crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding head-on with a garbage truck.

“Unfortunately, the driver and lone occupant of the SUV was located deceased at the scene,” said RCMP in a release Saturday.

Meanwhile, the driver of the garbage truck was not seriously injured, according to police.

Mounties say the Oceanside municipal traffic unit and RCMP collision analysis and reconstruction service are looking into the cause of the crash.

The BC Coroners Service is also conducting its own investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam video of the collision is asked to call the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111.
