A Duncan woman has been arrested and charged for multiple criminal offences after attempting to flee RCMP in Duncan.
Over the weekend, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say they responded to a report of a truck hitting a parked vehicle at the Cowichan Common Mall near Drinkwater road and the Trans-Canada Highway.
The driver, Rhiannon Midgley, was said by police to be driving erratically in circles, ramming stationary objects as well as the mall building itself. According to the RCMP, officers made multiple attempts to stop the vehicle from exiting the parking lot, but Midgley drove the truck onto the Trans-Canada Highway and headed south towards Duncan.
Authorities said that they were able to stop the car on Government Street, near Kenneth Street and arrest the 38-year-old woman.
Thankfully no one received serious injuries from this incident and the person responsible is being held accountable for her actions
said North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Detachment Commander Inspector Chris Bear in a press release. Driving while impaired, be it by drug or alcohol, is a serious offence, and this incident should serve as an eye opener for those who think that their actions while intoxicated carry no consequences.
Midgley was charged with multiple criminal offences including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer while operating a motor vehicle, 2 counts of fail to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to comply with a court order all under the Criminal Code of Canada, according to police.
The Duncan woman remains in custody as charges for impaired operation of a motor vehicle is also being sought following the full investigation of a specialized drug recognition expert.
