The federal budget provides a major benefit to BC Ferries.
Ottawa is now dropping all tariffs on imported ships.
That means BC Ferries will save about $50 million on three new ferries currently under construction in Poland.
Meanwhile shipbuilding contracts here in BC may be at risk as a planned 3.7 billion dollars in military spending is delayed indefinitely.
The B-C government is generally pleased with today’s federal budget from the new Liberal government.
Community and Sport Minister Peter Fassbender, who spoke on behalf of the province, says the budget is a good start towards investing in B-C infrastructure.
Fassbender, who’s also the minister in charge of Translink, says he’s happy that Justin Trudeau’s government is willing to pay up to 50 per cent for large infrastructure projects such as Surrey’s light rail and the Broadway Skytrain extension.
However, the minister says B-C’s contribution will still be one-third, meaning municipalities still need to come up with the remaining 17 per cent of their share.
