Firefighters say they had a complicated rescue on their hands after a box truck rolled off a highway near Nanaimo on Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the Nanaimo Parkway near Jingle Pot Road just before 8 a.m. for a report of a semi-truck rollover crash.

When firefighters arrived, they found a 12-metre (40 foot) box truck that was heading north had rolled off the side of the highway and into a ditch.

Two men were inside the truck at the time. The passenger of was injured but outside the truck when firefighters arrived, while the driver had to be extricated from the vehicle.

“This was a challenging extrication,” said Nanaimo Fire Rescue Acting Captain Mike Louie.

“It (the truck) was on its side so we had to stabilize the vehicle before entering, and these scenes are always difficult to navigate through, but crews did a really great job,” he said.

Louie says it’s unclear what the extent of the injuries are for each person, but the driver of the truck was taken to hospital by ambulance. He appeared to be alert and talking when he was removed from the vehicle, the fire captain said.
