Saanich Police issue two roadside prohibitions at scene of crash that knocked out power for hundreds

A single-vehicle crash that knocked out power for nearly 2,000 BC Hydro customers in Saanich over the weekend was caused by a driver who refused a breath sample, according to police.

Officers were called to the 4100-block of Wilkinson Road at around 10:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

The crash led to a temporary power outage in the area, affecting 1,859 customers in the Gorge-Tillicum and Colquitz areas.

The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries. When asked to provide a breath sample, police say the driver refused. As a result, they were issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and had their vehicle impounded for 30 days.

Another dangerous situation unfolded as first responders were still processing the scene.

Police say a passing driver tried to weave their way through parked emergency vehicles when they were flagged down by officers asking them to stop.

Officers once again demanded a breath test from the driver, the results of which prompted a three-day roadside ban and three-day vehicle impoundment.

“Our officers are specially trained to detect impaired drivers at road checks, collisions, and traffic stops,” said Saanich Police spokesman Const. Markus Anastasiades in a statement. “Unfortunately, we continue to engage with drivers that choose to drive while their ability is impaired by either alcohol or drug.”

Power was restored in the area by 1 p.m. Sunday.
