A vehicle was engulfed in flames along the shoulder of Highway 19 near Jingle Pot Road in Nanaimo Sunday afternoon.

One passerby who captured video of the fire around 1:30 p.m. said the highway was down to one lane southbound, which led to a traffic slowdown.

“You could feel the heat it was giving off as you drove by, even with the windows up,” the passerby told CHEK News.

They said they spotted a fire truck heading up the highway in the opposite direction, “probably making a U-turn at the closest intersection.”

According to Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief Troy Libbus, the fire resulted in no injuries.

“That’s a good thing. The guys put it out,” Libbus said, also noting crews used around 400 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Const. Gary O’Brien with Nanaimo RCMP says the vehicle’s owner told officers on scene that his leaking fuel injector likely sparked the blaze.

O’Brien says no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
