More than a dozen ferry sailings between Campbell River and Quadra Island are cancelled Wednesday due to strong winds and a mechanical issue on board, according to BC Ferries.

The ferry cancellations, totalling 16, come amid “forecasted adverse weather conditions and a mechanical issue with one of the ship’s right angle drives which lowers the vessel’s wind tolerance,” BC Ferries said.

Environment Canada issued a warning for the Strait of Georgia north of Nanaimo early Wednesday morning, with “gale” force winds of 34 to 47 knots occurring or expected in the marine area before diminishing overnight.

As a result, the following Powell River Queen sailings are cancelled for Dec. 7:

  • 3:05 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 3:30 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 4:00 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 4 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 5 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 5:25 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 5:50 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 6:15 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 7 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 7:30 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 8 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 8:30 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 9 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 9:30 p.m. departing Campbell River
  • 10 p.m. departing Quathiaski Cove
  • 10:30 p.m. departing Campbell River

All other sailings on the route, however, are expected to proceed as scheduled, according to BC Ferries in a service notice Wednesday.

The company also says a 12-passenger water taxi has been sourced to provide complimentary foot passenger service between Quadra Island (Quathiaski Cove) and Coast Marina (Campbell River) on the same schedule as the cancelled sailings.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us. We apologize for any inconvenience as a result of this mechanical issue and these cancellations,” BC Ferries added.
