Two liquor-makers on Vancouver Island were among the winners of this year’s World Drink Awards.
Sheringham Distillery, which was founded in Shirley and is now based out of Langford, and Esquimalt Vermouth & Apertifis took home medals for their respective categories at the awards, which were announced last week.
Sherringham took home a gold medal for its Fresh Lemon Liqueur in the World Liquer Awards “Best Fruit” category.
The awards organization described the liqueur as having “big and zesty flavours” with a classic lemon punch.
“Overall, this liqueur is expressive and delivers a robust lemon zest taste that is sure to please the palate.”
Meanwhile, Esquimalt Vermouth took home a silver medal for its Rosso Vermouth, which was entered into the “Semi-Sweet” category.
The World Drink Awards complimented the fortified wine for having a “sophisticated” flavour that is great for mixing with cocktails or drinking on its own.
“A hazy brown vermouth offers a complex nose of eucalyptus cinnamon, gingerbread and nuts,” said the awards. “The palate reveals a bittersweet finish with a hint of cola, complemented by fresh apple skin, vanilla, and woody undertones, hints of honey, and a herbaceous, lightly bitter finish.”

The World Drink Awards first launched in 2007, and features expert judges tasting drinks across 35 categories through blind taste tests.
This year, the winner’s were announced in Norwich, England.
“It was another outstanding year at the World Drink Awards and being one of the key judges and chair of a couple of categories means that I had the privilege to look into it and we have seen a lovely variety and diversity of entries,” said Tobia Gorn, chair of judges for the Liqueur and International Drinks Specialists Consultant.
“We had a fantastic time judging with some industry legends and friends and after some lovely discussions we came up with some great results.”
