Rebels best Raiders in Island showdown

Despite falling to an early 14-3 deficit, the Westshore Rebels rallied in the fourth quarter to take down the V.I. Raiders 27-25 in BCFC action at Caledonia Park in Nanaimo Saturday.

The Raiders would open the scoring early, as Jake Laberge would find North Rainey in the end zone for a touchdown, and after a Westshore field goal, Laberge would fine Brycen Mayoh to make it 14-3 Raiders. The Rebels seemed disoriented for the majority of the half, with some emotions boiling over on the sideline between Rebels linemen Chris Larsen and Kent Hicks. The two players would have to be separated by fellow coaches and players. Luckily, a 109-yard drive was capped off by a touchdown from Scott Borden to Nate Skeete to make it 14-10 Raiders at the half.

In the fourth quarter, the Rebels would take their first lead of the game as Rebels quarterback Scott Borden would leap over the goal line, breaking the plane for the touchdown to make it 17-14 Westshore. After the two teams traded field goals, the deciding play would come midway through the fourth quarter, as a bad Raider snap would lead to a blocked kick, and in storybook fashion, Kent Hicks would recover the kick and pass off to Chris Larsen for the return touchdown. The two players who were at each others’ throats earlier in the game teamed up for the game-clinching touchdown, as the Rebels take down the Raiders 27-25.
