VicPD apprehend man after he allegedly ran through an apartment, kicking at doors and damaging property

The Victoria Police officers successfully apprehended a man Thursday morning, after he allegedly damaged an apartment building and ran through its hallways.

Just before 3:30 a.m.Thursday morning, Patrol officers were called to a multi-unit residential building in the 300-block of Douglas Street after receiving calls from several residents who were concerned for their safety.

They reported that a man was running through hallways in the apartment, kicking at doors and damaging property. 

VicPD says multiple Patrol officers attended and found the man, who had barricaded himself inside a suite within the building.

Officers began negotiations with him and utilized crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques in efforts to resolve the incident and take the man into custody safely, according to police.

Officers learned that the man was in a mental health crisis, and he refused to comply with the officers. Police say a “less-lethal” bean bag round was deployed during the incident. 

 One hour after police were called at around 4:30 a.m., the man surrendered and officers apprehended him under the Mental Health Act. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and for a mental health assessment.

The file remains under investigation, VicPD will be recommending charges of mischief.
