U.S. authorities confirm two bodies found during search for B.C. kayakers

San Juan County Sheriffs have confirmed with CHEK News that two bodies have been recovered in their search for two missing Island kayakers.

Sheriff Eric Peter with San Juan County says the identity of the bodies has not been confirmed to that of the two missing males.

On April 22, Peter says sheriffs recovered a body floating in the water near Grandma’s Cove on the southwest side of San Juan Island. Grandma’s Cove is about 20 kilometres southeast of Henry Island, where the kayak was found.

Around 6:30 a.m. on April 23, Sheriff’s responded to a report of a floating body at Middle Channel, which is south of Cattle Point on San Juan Island.

“The Sheriff’s boat was launched and the deceased body of one male was recovered from the water and turned over to the coroner’s office,” said Sheriff Eric Peter in a phone call.

The identities of the two bodies have yet to be confirmed.

Peter says he doesn’t “foresee any other search efforts going forward.”

“At this time we have no other information that would necessitate more search efforts,” said the sheriff.

The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP has said two men went missing Saturday while kayaking between D’Arcy Island and Island View Beach, just north of Victoria.

They said 36-year-old Daniel MacAlpine and 26-year-old Nicolas West were in a teal blue fibreglass, two-person, kayak.

The search for the pair had expanded south into U.S. waters on Monday.
