Community events will also take place throughout the day, including the Buccaneer Market Place, and the midway will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

On Sunday, highlights include a Mother’s Day champagne breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and a sky diver demonstration at 3 p.m.

The midway will also be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Decades-old event

Esquimalt Buccaneer Days traces its roots back to 1939, when the municipality first started hosting May Queen celebrations.

The event eventually grew into Buccaneer Days in 1966, with the residents dressing up in pirate-themed clothing “vying for prizes for the best costume.”

It was also the start of the “Wakey, Wakey” morning call during Buccaneer Days.

“Buccaneer Days festivities have always been well attended, with over 20 community organizations taking part, which allows our community to work and play together, have a great time, and instill a feeling of accomplishment and pride in our community,” read the Buccaneer Days website.

The full schedule for this year’s event can be found on the Buccaneer Days website.
