A possible tsunami that could have hit the B.C. coast has sparked debate on the effectiveness of Vancouver Island’s emergency alert system.

Many were sent scrambling to higher ground after a tsunami warning was issued just after 1 a.m. on Jan. 23.

Some woke up hours after, completely unaware of the possible danger.
