Oak Bay police catch two drivers going over double the speed limit

Two drivers, a little over an hour apart, were caught driving over double the speed limit on Beach Drive in Oak Bay on Sunday.

The first was around 8:20 p.m. when police were doing speed enforcement near Beach Drive and Newport Avenue, which is a 40 km/h speed zone. A 21-year-old man was caught driving 94 km/h, which is 54 km/h over the speed limit.

The second occurred at 9:30 p.m. at the same intersection. A 23-year-old man was stopped driving 103 km/h.

Both drivers were issued tickets for Excessive Speed for $368 and had their vehicles impounded for seven days.

Beach Drive is a road in Oak Bay where police frequently catch speeders. In October and November, police conducted enforcement in these areas and caught five speeders in five days in both months.

According to ICBC’s crash map, three crashes occurred at the Beach Drive and Newport Avenue intersection between 2018 and 2022. In that same timeframe, 66 crashes have occurred at intersections on Beach Drive.
