New rock climbing gym, BoulderHouse, set to open in Langford

A brand new rock climbing gym is set to open this week and introduce the activity of bouldering to the West Shore.

A new location of BoulderHouse will officially open its doors on Thursday, June 17, located at 1109 Langford Parkway — directly behind Starlight Stadium.

The climbing gym is a two-storey facility that includes a 150 linear feet main wall, a dedicated training area, and a 6000 sq. ft. dedicated kid’s section.

This will mark the second BoulderHouse location in the area, joining BoulderHouse Victoria, located at 2829 Quesnel St.

“We are so proud to have this incredible facility open in Langford,” says Mayor Stew Young. “It will provide Langford residents with more recreation options without having to leave their community.”

According to Young, BoulderHouse Langford intends on engaging with local schools to encourage the use of the facility for non-traditional physical education programming.

“It will also be a new option for summer camps and for children’s birthday parties which is another important feature for Langford as a young, growing community,” Young adds.

The City says that through its partnership with BoulderHouse, the duo is aiming to bring both recreational and competitive programming for youth, as well as attracting national and international competitions to the city.

Climbing will be introduced to a broader international audience this summer as it will be newly featured at the Tokyo Olympics.

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring climbing to the West Shore.” says co-owner Rob Somogyi, “There has been a long history of outdoor climbing in the area and with the addition of an indoor facility, the community as a whole will benefit from having an accessible space to learn how to climb in their neighbourhood.”

Langford outlines that bringing in BoulderHouse and the sport of climbing lines up with its vision of building a national sports capital, which is already home to six other Olympic sports.
