Residents and visitors of Nanaimo and the Comox Valley will soon be able to try out an e-bike, or use it for general commuting.

Starting on May 1, the Evolve E-Bike Share service, a joint program launched by BCAA and EVO, will launch in Nanaimo for a 12-month public program.

The e-bike sharing service will launch in the Harbour City with 50 e-bikes at the start, with plans to increase that number to 100 later this summer.

BCAA also plans for there to be 16 “parking zones” for the e-bikes once the program ramps up in the summer.

The parking zones will be located in the downtown core, as well as in “key recreational areas,” including Maffeo Sutton Park, Bowen Park, Port Theatre and Brooks Landing Mall.

Later this summer, BCAA says it’s looking at adding parking zones at the BC Ferries terminal, the Hullo Ferry terminal, and Vancouver Island University.

The e-bike sharing service is also scheduled to launch in the Comox Valley in “summer 2024,” but there’s no word yet on an exact date or location.

How it works

To use one of the e-bikes, people must download the Evo app, and then scan the QR code on an e-bike to unlock it.

People can then pay by the minute or the hour to operate the bike, or opt-in to a monthly subscription.

Once you’re finished riding, you must drop the e-bike off at a designated Evolve parking zone.

Helmets will also be located in a basket on each e-bike, and riders are expected to wear them, according to BCAA.

The cost for using one of the Evolve e-bikes is $0.35 per minute, or $12.99 per hour. People who opt into the $9.99 monthly subscription can use the e-bikes for a reduced price of $0.10 per minute.

The Evolve E-bike Share program is already up and running in Whistler, as well as at the Simon Fraser University campus in Burnaby. It’s also available to private businesses in Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Whistler, according to BCAA.
