Three Vancouver Island Junior A hockey teams have been forced to postpone a handful of their upcoming games due to the novel coronavirus.

The BCHL announced Monday that the Cowichan Valley Capitals, Langley Rivermen and Penticton Vees have paused all team activities for the next five days as a result of the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

“All games involving the three teams up to Jan. 9 will be postponed,” the league said in a statement.

As a result, the Cowichan Capitals home game against the Langley Rivermen on Jan. 6 has been postponed as has their game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Jan. 7.

The Nanaimo Clippers game at home against the Langley Rivermen on Jan. 7 has also been postponed along with the Victoria Grizzlies Jan. 9 game against the Rivermen in Langely.

The Capitals are due to resume play on Jan. 11 against the Bulldogs. The Clippers’ next game is set for Jan. 8 against the Bulldogs while the Grizzlies’ next game is against the Powell River Kings on Jan. 5.

The announcement comes on the same day B.C. health officials reported more than 9,000 new cases of COVID-19 over a three-day period.
