Victoria council candidate pitches downtown splash pad in campaign launch

A current civil servant who hopes to see a splash park in downtown Victoria has announced his bid for city council.

Matt Dell announced Tuesday morning that he will be running as a candidate for city council in the upcoming Oct. 15 municipal election.

“I am a leader that listens, I believe in more openness at city hall and I want to bring people together to build a better Victoria,” he said in a press release.

Dell, who is also president of the South Jubilee Neighbourhood Association, said one of the key reasons why he is running is because he has a vision for a new Centennial Square. He also wants more public spaces, parks and amenities including a splash pad somewhere in the downtown core.

“I’m a parent of young kids, and I want a city where my children can afford to live when they grow up,” said Dell, who lives in South Jubilee with his family. “We can build more density and walkable neighbourhoods while preserving the unique character that makes Victoria special.”

Dell is a long-time Victoria resident, musician, former Crystal Pool lifeguard, community volunteer and civil servant who has worked developing public policy for the provincial government. He has a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Victoria.

Provincial policymaker Jeremy Caradonna and documentary filmmaker Krista Loughton have also launched bids for a council seat this October.
