Man arrested after sexually assaulting at least five women downtown Victoria

Victoria Police say a man was arrested Saturday night after officers saw him sexually assaulting women.

Officers were called to the 1100-block of Douglas Street just after 9 p.m. for a report that a man was sexually assaulting people.

When officers arrived, they saw the man approach a group of women and sexually assault them from behind. VicPD say he was immediately taken into custody.

He is being held in custody, and faces multiple recommended sexual assault charges.

While officers were speaking with the three women that had been observed being sexually assaulted, two more women, one of whom VicPD describes as a youth, told officers they had been sexually assaulted by the man.

None of the women knew the man, according to police.

In a release, VicPD says none of the women required medical attention, but at least one was struck with enough force to knock her to the ground.

Officers believe there may be other victims who have not yet spoken with police.

“Based on the initial call for service and witness information, investigators believe that the suspect sexually assaulted others who have not yet come forward,” VicPD says in a release.

“We want survivors of sexualized violence to know that we believe you. For information on supports for survivors, including options for reporting, please visit vicpd.ca/webelieveyou.”
